I have always been a dog person. All my life I have loved those wagging tails, loving eyes and pure adoration a dog friend can provide. They are cute, (hopefully) cuddly and the best of friend you can find. For some unknown reason, perhaps the moon slipped into retrograde, or the sun accelerated too quickly to create a temporary alternate universe, regardless of how or why it happened the fact remained the same: last year I somehow found myself charging headfirst into an obsession with cats. I have racked my brain, thought of where I was in my life and have tried to decipher why on earth I would find myself in this fascinated state of consciousness but, alas, I can find no answer other than being a late bloomer in the world’s love of cats.
Soon, my Instagram’s “discover” page was infiltrated with funny cat videos, memes and pictures. I also found myself selecting to watch the Netflix documentary “Inside the Mind of a Cat” one cold winter evening. I loved to see the playful nature exhibited by felines. It got me thinking of my cat-owner friends and the stories they would tell me of their cats randomly making a wallop of noise in the middle of the night. Of course, this documentary mentioned the nocturnal nature of cats, but I began to delve deeper. Sure, 2am is when a cat feels most alive but what on earth could they be doing? The puzzle pieces slowly found their places in my mind as I began to unravel the truth behind these late-night bustles. It was blatantly obvious—the cats must be getting jiggy with it and throwing their very own disco in the dark!
I am absolutely certain of it-- if you were able to spy on your living room you would find your cat throwing its booty from side to side as it glided about on the dance floor showing its best side-steps, pelvic thrusts and shoulders rocks to put any iconic disco dancer to shame! Using the moon and its beams as their disco ball they dance the night away in full sway, throwing around your (who are we kidding, their) lamps, plants and delicates to match the beat they are releasing from the music within their agile bodies. How else can we explain their slovenly nature after the sun joins the sky? Convinced of this scene, I found myself grabbing for my black round tipped Posca marker to create the move and groove of our feline friend in the dark. This is mind wave our groovy 2AM Disco Cat rode as it danced its way to life. I hope when you see this piece you can finally share the flare and the fun your cat is having while disturbing your peaceful slumber in the dead of the night.
I hope that you have enjoyed this little insight into one of my fun-filled and funky originals and hope to see you next week for another of my Sunday Offbeat Anecdotes!
As always,
Keep it offbeat!
